TIME FOR A WARDROBE RESET: TOP AUTUMN/WINTER 2023 TRENDS

As Milan and Paris Fashion Week came to a close this September, a new set of trends swept the streets for fall. Eclectic as ever, the looks ranged from snug to spooky, raunchy to rebellious, and feathery to fiery, with new power colours pushing to take pink’s place as the shade of the season. Zalando shares the top trends stealing the show this autumn:

RUFFLE SOME FEATHERS
Adding an airy femininity to any outfit, feathered garments of all kinds were seen swanning through the streets Milan and Paris. Inspired by the likes of Valentino and Bottega Veneta’s AW24 collections, plumes are certainly popular this season. Whether it’s a feathered trouser hem, a Selena Gomez ‘Single Soon’ purple fluffy jacket, or full-blown feathered frock, there are endless ways to style this party-girl essential.

REBEL REBEL
The antithesis of dopamine dressing, Rebel Rebel is one of the trends bringing all-black-everything back to the forefront of fashion this AW23. It’s speculated that designers who exhibited the punk-meets-biker look on the runways were paying tribute to the late queen of non-conformist fashion, Dame Vivienne Westwood. The trend can be embraced through a black leather biker jacket, a fishnet vest, black jeans and a pair of Doc’s. Or, to add extra grunge, swap the vest and black jeans out for a pleated tartan dress and tights.

50 HUES OF BLUE
With many designers showcasing an array of blue shades across their collections, it looks like BarbieTM pink is out and blue is in. From teal trenches and baby blue ribbons, to cobalt blue bags and shirt dresses, the colour was appearing on the streets and stages in just about every style and staple.

IT’S A WRAP
Synonymous with the autumn season, transitional scarves and high-necked jackets were seen all over Paris as industry insiders wrapped up warm to combat the cooler weather. As king of cosy, Lenny Kravitz, officially marked the start of fall by wearing that brown scarf in his debut TikTok, the trend is predicted to blow up, and we’ll be seeing more XXL scarves alike in colder months to come.

SCARLET SEASON
Red has been slowly but surely asserting itself as the new power colour since the beginning of the year, with the likes of Balmain, Sandy Liang and many others soft-launching the shade in their collections back in February. But in September, designers went for the hard launch, with striking scarlets showing up in numerous collections across Milan and Paris shows. Flaunting the fiery colour, millennial ‘it girl’, Emily Ratajkowski wore an off-the-shoulder thigh-split red dress as she attended the Loewe Paris Fashion Week show.

WITCHY NAILS
Spooky season is upon us, and with that, ghoulish glam is taking the beauty scene by storm. Expect to see long witchy nails in dark mattes including green, black and blood red taking over Instagram feeds this October. Or, for those who get extra festive, subtle spider webs creeping out from nail beds and celestial nail art will be popular requests at salons this season.
